Centre Suspends Cell Broadcast System After Operational Rollout; Delhi on Red Alert as Severe Weather and Hyderabad Rains Disrupt Flights
The Union Government has suspended the Cell Broadcast disaster alert system after its operational rollout without stating reasons. Delhi has been placed under a red alert as IMD warns of thunderstorms and strong winds up to 80 kmph on June 12, 2026. Meanwhile, heavy rains in Hyderabad disrupted flight operations at RGIA, diverting nine flights including one carrying the Telangana Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has placed Delhi under a red alert for the night of June 12, 2026, warning of moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and squally winds. Wind speeds are expected to reach 60–70 kilometres per hour, with gusts potentially rising up to 80 kilometres per hour across the city, signalling severe weather conditions and potential disruption to urban life and transport.
In a separate weather-related disruption, heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Hyderabad on Friday evening and continued through the night, severely affecting flight operations at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The adverse conditions led to the diversion of nine flights, including an IndiGo flight arriving from Delhi that was carrying Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. Airport operations were significantly impacted as air traffic was forced to adjust schedules amid reduced visibility and persistent rainfall.
Authorities continue to monitor both situations as weather-related alerts remain active and operational agencies respond to disruptions affecting communication systems, aviation, and public safety infrastructure across multiple regions.
The developments underscore the growing vulnerability of critical urban systems to extreme weather events and the importance of robust emergency communication networks during rapidly evolving climatic conditions.
